Guitar Classes in Singapore: A Practical Path From First Chords to Full Songs

Student learning electric guitar during beginner guitar classes in Singapore, practising chords and building confidence with guided instruction.

If every lesson has a purpose, learning to play the guitar becomes less complicated and enjoyable. At Groove Music School, our guitar classes are tailored for everyone – from complete beginners and returning players, to those aiming to refine advanced technique. We provide learner-specific guidance tailored to your preferred mode of study, musical background, and aspirations.

The right guitar course should get you playing without overwhelming you with too much information. It starts with the fundamentals, including posture, instrument tuning, guitar care, and very basic chords. Establishing these basics builds the foundation and gives you confidence. As for those with experience, lessons that focus on refining technique, expanding chord vocabulary and exploring different playing styles will help you reach the next level.

Learning the Essential Guitar Skills

Most guitar lessons for beginners start with open chords G, C, D, E, and A. Your instructor will start with strumming patterns, so that instead of just working on the motions of playing basic chord shapes, individual notes are more meaningful because they can be played as part of a song. Daily work also strengthens your fingers and makes every change of chord a little more fluid.

As your playing techniques develop, lessons will introduce minor chords, power chords, finger style, and plucking patterns. Your listening skills also improve, enabling you to recognise rhythm, pitch, and common progressions. Musicality accumulates over the long run as you associate, strum, and utilise each new expertise on genuine tunes.

Depending on your interest, you can study acoustic guitar, classical guitar, bass, or pop. Music lessons also teach concepts such as improvisation or music performance skills. A well-trained instructor can vary the topics so that every student grows at an attainable pace.

A 12-Week Guitar Course Outline

The guitar course has an active schedule that guides learners through distinct phases. The way it is sequenced allows students to build their skills without skipping any vital steps. Suitable for children, teens and adults, the lessons provide a well-rounded learning experience specifically set for each student’s pace and goals, regardless of skill level.

  • Weeks 1–4: Guitar care, posture, tuning, basic chords, strumming patterns, chord progressions and one beginner-friendly song
  • Weeks 5–8: Minor and intermediate chords, basic fingerpicking, new guitar techniques and a second beginner-friendly song
  • Weeks 9–12: Jamming, improvisation, a more complex song, useful tips and a review of progress

With this structure, everything you learn on the guitar feels like it builds towards meaningful progress. At the end of the course, you’ll have improved rhythm and playing technique, with the confidence to play full songs. The focus stays practical throughout, with music theory concepts included to further enhance your overall musical development.

Private and Group Guitar Lessons

The private lessons are perfect for students who need that extra personal guidance on their own time. In this way, every single session could be customised around your own weaknesses, strengths, and repertoire. Depending on your lesson format, four private guitar lessons cost S$260-S$380.

Other guitar classes are more for social learning, such as group lessons that let students play with others. The group guitar class includes 12 lessons at S$300 per month, with group sessions that encourage timing, listening and shared practice. At Groove Music School, both formats are designed to support steady progress rather than rushed results. The appropriate form of learning is the schedule that works for you, considering how it’ll suit your studying habits and your musical journey.

Online and In-Person Learning Options

Online lessons are perfect for learners who cannot travel or whose schedules make attending in-person lessons difficult. Lessons being done online offer greater flexibility while providing the same personalised instruction and support. An online guitar class can be delivered through video tutorials covering chords, rhythm, music theory, and songs. Many online courses also allow you to revisit or review the lesson materials at your own pace.

In-person guitar lessons, on the other hand, provide the hands-on guidance that is difficult to replicate online. The instructor has a much better view of your posture, where your hands are positioned, and which techniques you should be using. This can be especially useful with difficult chords. There may also be students who blend online guitar help with studio-based guitar training for additional flexibility.
