Group Singing Lessons in Singapore: What to Expect and Who They Suit Best

Signing up for a class feels like a bigger commitment when there are other people in the room. That’s usually the moment someone pauses before booking, group singing lessons or a one-to-one slot, and isn’t sure which one actually fits.

The short answer: group singing lessons work well for beginners who want structure, a lower cost per session, and the motivation that comes from learning alongside other people. Solo lessons work better when the goal is fast, individually paced progress on one specific voice, or when performance anxiety makes a room full of other beginners feel like the wrong place to start. Neither format is objectively better. They are built for different starting points.

At Groove Music School in Singapore, group vocal classes run as an ongoing monthly subscription, four lessons a month, for four to eight participants, rather than a one-off package. There is no fixed end date. Members simply continue for as long as they want and can cancel with notice when they decide to stop.

What Makes Group Singing Lessons Different From Solo Lessons?

The format itself is the biggest difference, not just the price. A group class runs as an ongoing monthly subscription with the same small group of people each week, four to eight participants, working through the same material together for as long as everyone stays enrolled. Solo lessons are booked as a set of four sessions built entirely around one student’s voice and pace, with a clear start and end.

Research published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that music students who took part in collaborative, peer-based learning reported stronger benefits to their sense of belonging, motivation, and confidence than those working one to one only. That lines up with what a group format is actually designed to do: build confidence through shared experience, not just technical correction.

Vocal classes here are led by the school’s founder, running as ongoing monthly sessions rather than a one-off package, so members build on the same technique together week after week for as long as they choose to stay. It is not a watered down version of a private lesson. It is a different course entirely.

Who Do Group Singing Lessons in Singapore Actually Suit?

Group classes tend to suit complete beginners who feel less pressure being one of several people learning at the same time, rather than the sole focus of a teacher’s attention for a full hour. They also suit people motivated by accountability, showing up because a small group expects you, not just because a calendar reminder says so.

Adults exploring singing lessons in Singapore for the first time often assume a group setting will feel more exposing than one to one, when in practice the opposite tends to be true for many beginners. Nobody in the room is further ahead than anyone else in week one, which removes a lot of the self-consciousness that comes from being the only beginner in front of a teacher who has already heard hundreds of confident voices.

If personalised pacing matters more to you than the social side, individual singing lessons follow a different structure built entirely around one student’s goals and current voice, which is worth a look before committing either way.

What Do You Give Up by Choosing a Group Class?

It is worth being honest about the trade-off. A group class does not offer the same unshared time with a teacher that individual lessons do. Every minute of a solo lesson belongs entirely to one student. In a group setting, that same hour is divided among everyone in the room.

There is also less room to skip ahead or slow down based on your specific voice, since the whole group is progressing at a shared pace together. For someone with a very particular technical issue, a rushed vowel sound, an inconsistent upper register, that kind of narrow correction usually needs individual attention rather than a shared session built for the whole room.

It is also a rolling subscription rather than a fixed package. Cancelling requires giving notice. It is not instant, and that is worth knowing before signing up rather than after.

None of this makes a group class the wrong choice. It simply means the trade is real, and it is worth naming plainly rather than glossing over: shared pacing and lower cost on one side, fully individual attention on the other. Most beginners can name which of those two matters more to them within a few seconds of hearing the trade stated this way.

How Much Do Group Singing Lessons Cost Compared to Solo Lessons?

Group Vocal Classes Individual Singing Lessons
Format Ongoing monthly subscription 4 lessons, booked individually
Group size 4 to 8 participants One to one
Price $220 per month (4 lessons) $270 to $420 for four lessons
Commitment Rolling, cancel anytime with notice One-time package, ends after four lessons
Pacing Shared, ongoing progression Personalised to one student

At $220 a month for four lessons, e cost noticeably less than a one-time package of four individual lessons, while continuing for as long as a member wants rather than stopping after one set of four. That is the trade most people are actually making: lower ongoing cost and shared motivation, in exchange for less individual, unshared attention.

Ready to Choose Your Format?

The most common hesitation at this point is simply not wanting to sing in front of strangers before feeling ready. That is a fair concern, and it is exactly why a trial lesson exists, to find out how a format actually feels before committing to an ongoing class. Our teaching team works with complete beginners regularly, in both formats, so nobody in a group class is starting from a position of already knowing what they are doing.

If you are still unsure which format suits you, Groove Music School offers trial lessons for both group and individual vocal classes, so you can feel the difference yourself rather than guess from a description.

Book a trial lesson and find out which format actually fits your voice and your schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can complete beginners join a group singing class, or should they start one to one? Complete beginners are welcome in group classes. If stage fright is a bigger concern than cost, starting one to one first and moving into a group later is a reasonable order too, there is no rule that says group classes must come first.

What happens if I miss a session of a group class? Since classes now run as an ongoing monthly subscription rather than a fixed course, missing an occasional session is less likely to mean falling permanently behind the rest of the group than it would in a short, fixed programme. It’s still worth checking the specific catch-up policy directly, since the details can vary.

Can I cancel a group vocal class subscription at any time? Yes, though notice is required rather than instant cancellation. Since it runs as a rolling monthly subscription, it’s worth checking the exact notice period before signing up, rather than assuming it matches how individual lesson packages work.

Is group singing more affordable because the teaching quality is lower? No. The price difference reflects the format, one teacher working with several students at once, rather than a difference in who is teaching or how qualified they are.

Can I switch from a group class to individual lessons later? Yes. Plenty of students use a group class to build initial confidence and basic technique, then move to individual lessons once they have a clearer sense of what they specifically want to work on.
